Caney, Kansas (September 16, 2017)- The Lucas Oil POWRi West Midget League made their way to Caney Valley Speedway for the second night of the weekend. Mother Nature decided that she would take over track prep duties, and dumped rain on the track shortly after the gates opened. When the sky cleared, the Caney Valley Speedway crew got right to work to get the pits and track back into drivable conditions.
With 17 cars signing in, there would be 2 heats, and all cars would move on the A. The Smith Titanium Heat 1 would be won by the 92 of Austin Lambert. The Saldana Racing Products Heat 2 would be won by the 7U of Matt Sherrell. After starting 7th in his heat and winning, Austin Lambert would be the Integrity Customs of Tulsa High Point Winner. He rolled a 6, inverting the first 3 rows.
The new front row would be the 52 of Andrew Deal and to his outside would be the 28M of Ace McCarthy. On the start of A Feature action, the 9$ of Kyle Clark, the 24 of Hunter Fischer, and 42 of Hank Davis would collect together in turn 2. All three cars would refire and rejoin the field. Officials doubled the field back up to try again. On the restart, the 27 of Zane Hendricks, the 42 of Hank Davis, the 24, the 9$, the 92 of Austin Lambert, and the 28 of Kory Schudy would get together in turn two. The 92, 42, and the 28 would refire and join the field, but unfortunately the night was over for the 27, 9$, and 24. While the crews were working in turn 2, the 28M of Ace McCarthy and 7U of Matt Sherrell would come to a stop in turn 4. Both would rejoin the field. The field lined back up again, this time the front row would be the 52 of Andrew Deal and the 91T of Tyler Thomas. Trouble again in turn 2 as the yellow would fly for the 92, 42, and 28. The 92 of Austin Lambert would go to the work area to change a flat left tire, and both the 42 and 28 would tag the field. On the last double file restart, with Lambert still in the work area, the caution would come back out for the 42 in turn 4, and he would head back to his pit. Since no laps were completed, Lambert could rejoin the field.
The field lined up, this time single file, with Andrew Deal leading them back to green. Tyler Thomas passed Deal on the first lap with a slider in turns 3 and 4 and would grow his lead until lap 8 when the 7U of Matt Sherrell would bring out the caution in turn 2. Sherrell would refire and join the group. Thomas would lead the field back to green with Deal and Chandler in tow. After the restart, Thomas would put space between him and Deal. Chandler and McCarthy would be battling for 3rd place. Austin Lambert, who was sent to the back twice, had made his way back up into 4th, while the 77S of Alex DeCamp, 28 of Kory Schudy, and the 7U of Matt Sherrell would be fighting for 6th. The rest of the night went caution free, with lots of battling for positions. Lambert would challenge McCarthy for 3rd, while Chandler moved into 2nd after Deal dropped out of the race with 5 to go. Thomas would sweep the weekend, the 00 of Grady Chandler would take 2nd, the 92 of Austin Lambert would finish 3rd, the 28M of Ace McCarthy would finish 4th, and rounding out the top 5 would be the 77S of Alex DeCamp.
The next event for the Lucas Oil POWRi West Midget League is September 29th and September 30th for the National/West Co-Sanction race at Belle-Clair Speedway in Belleville, Illinois for the Meents Memorial.
