ELDON, MO. (August 14, 2019) – Returning to Lake Ozark Speedway in Eldon, Mo. this Friday and Saturday, August 16-17 for the Non-Wing Nationals, the second annual event is attracting drivers of all kind to come compete with the POWRi Lucas Oil WAR Sprint League. An icon of sorts in the ranks of winged sprint car racing in Missouri, Jonathan Cornell is like a local legend, but this weekend he faces a new challenge as he goes topless and makes his WAR debut at Lake Ozark.
A winner of 41-career ASCS Warrior Region features and a six-time series champion, Cornell of Sedalia, Mo. has long been of the most respected and revered 360 competitors in and around Missouri. However, this weekend, he’ll encounter a task unlike anything he has seen before, as he tackles Lake Ozark Speedway WITHOUT the wings, hoping to strike for some surprise glory in the second annual Non-Wing Nationals with the WAR Sprints.
“I’m really excited about this weekend, it’ll be interesting to give this whole non-wing thing a try,” said Cornell. “It’s nice to know I’ll be at a place that I’m comfortable with like Lake Ozark, but it’ll still be quite the challenge going wingless. I can’t thank Chris Parkinson enough for the opportunity, it should be fun.”
Piloting a second Chris Parkinson entry, Cornell will be driving for a team and competitor that has seen plenty of success over the years. The 2014 POWRi Lucas Oil WAR Sprint League champion, Parkinson of Gladstone, Mo. is also ranked second on the all-time WAR wins list with eight victories to his name. Combine the years of veteran non-wing experience from Parkinson with the diverse driving ability of Cornell and you find an intriguing dynamic ahead of this weekend’s special.
Marking the second annual Non-Wing Nationals, the POWRi Lucas Oil WAR Sprint League debuted this event in thrilling fashion last year when Kyle Cummings of Princeton, Ind. made the trip and hauled the loot away in his first trip to Lake Ozark Speedway. One of the nicest facilities and raciest surfaces on the schedule, drivers and fans are always in for a treat when WAR breaks out at the Eldon, Mo. 3/8th-mile.
