Belleville, IL. (07/26/2020) The POWRi Lucas Oil Midwest Lightning Sprints were back in action at their home facility of I-35 Speedway this past Saturday night. After Ken Billings and Alex Davis, each earned heat race victories the field of fourteen MLS entrants would have a highly contested feature with Illinois wheelman Brandon Smith claiming the night’s top honors.
With a front-row consisting of the prior heat race winners, Alex Davis #42 and Ken Billings #85 would be dueling at the front on the opening laps with Billings getting the better of the two gaining the lead. With Billings pacing the field, Brandon Smith #11 would not hesitate to battle for the prized position. Starting the feature third, Smith would use a precise cornering maneuver to gain speed off the fourth corner and the lead down front-stretch.
Smith, earning his first POWRi MLS feature victory, was able to hold off the many attempts of second-place finisher Ken Billings, both racing a clean and outstanding feature event. MLS season point-leader Stanley Kreisel #18 would have his work cut out for him, starting in eight and racing his way to finish third while gaining a hard charger award in the process. Series front-runner Chase Fischer #22 continues to impress with another great showing by maintaining position throughout the race and finishing fourth. Tyler Johnson #7 would round out the top five, driving from a seventh starting spot.
