David Sheffield met Josh Hanna while working at Huntsman in the R&D Headquarters in The Woodlands, TX. Sheffield has a passion for all forms of racing and enjoys spectating motocross, NASCAR, and sprint cars. When Josh purchased a 305 sprint car to run in Willis, TX, David immediately joined the team and converted his own 4-wheeler into the team's push cart. David hopes to use this season to learn more about racing so the team can become more competitive as time passes.
David started by helping a friend at the dirt track races in 1975. Over that period of time he has helped or owned various types of race cars from wing modifieds, limited modifieds, sprint cars, ARCA cars, NASCAR late models, and the NASCAR Craftsman truck series. When Mike Herring started with the inaugural Sprint Series of Texas, David reunited with Mike and later with Bud Hanna. He has more fun with this series and Mike's crew than all of his other racing endeavors.
Rick mainly worked on ASA asphalt cars in the Indianapolis area until he moved to Flower Mound, TX in 1989. He then met Mike Herring through a mutual friend in 1992 and quickly became a fixture in all of Mike's racing endeavors. Durham is "the guy" known for an unquantifiable work ethic and a willingness to help others. As a mechanic during the day, his expertise is always appreciated and highly valued with the crew during race weekends.
Randy started helping his brother Mike in the early 1970's. After his tour of duty with the Marines, Randy returned to help with all of Mike's racing efforts. Herring's current role with the SCP Racing team started with the inception of the Sprint Series of Texas in 2005.
Chris has a Ph.D. in Polymer Science and Engineering from the University of Southern Mississippi. He got into racing when his friend, Josh Hanna, began racing sprint cars in 2014. Since then he has been a tremendous asset to the team by providing input on car set up on race day and cooking meals for the team during our weekly Wednesday night meetings.
Regan is the owner and operator of Break-Thru Performance in Conroe, TX. Clark has 24+ years of experience with all aspects of this industry where he is very knowledgeable in industrial equipment design and development. He also graduated from Sam Houston State University with a Bachelor of Science in Physics. In his spare time, Regan plays rugby with The Woodlands Rugby Football Club where he met Josh Hanna. Regan is looking forward to being on the race team and improving the Houston-Area sprint car dynamic.
From Northeast Mississippi, Tiny Spencer was introduced to racing through Bud Hanna in 2007. At the time Bud Hanna organized a major go-kart race through downtown Booneville, MS and Spencer helped Bud with the kart he entered into the race. Since then Tiny has been a part of the SCP Racing team and has spent the last three years assisting the #80 sprint car. Tiny enjoys working with animals while ranching and is looking forward to the 2015 season with the SCP/Old Air Products Racing team fielding three cars.
Rick has been involved with dirt track racing since the early 1970’s. His racing career has included owning and driving while teaming up with Mike Herring in 1983 to field a winged modified. His primary expertise is building engines, but he also excels in shock and torsion bar selections at the race track. Rick has built some monster horsepower small block motors throughout his career. When the Sprint Series of Texas formed Mike Herring made sure that Rick built the engine that powers his car. He is the “motor man” for all three SCP Racing teams. Rick believes the current racing team is one of the best because of team personnel and current sponsorship. Old Air Products is his employer and also a proud sponsor for Mike Herring's #99 car.
Chris is fairly new to the dirt track racing world. His neighbor and friend, Rick Farr, invited him to his first race at Boyd Raceway back in 2012. Needless to say, he was hooked from that moment and has been a racing fan ever since. Of all the dirt track classifications, he favors sprint cars, but also likes the Midgets and has been to the last three Chili Bowls in Tulsa. This year will be his fourth race season with the SCP/Old Air Products Racing team. Being a competitive person, Chris enjoys the camaraderie that comes with being a part of a team that strives to be the best but still believes in having a good time.
